Chandigarh, August 16:
Canadian Counsel General Ms. Helen Amundsen called on S. Sukhbir Singh Badal, Acting President Shiromani Akali Dal (B) today. Noting the desire of the Punjab Government to set up a Metro Project in Ludhiana, she stated that Canadian companies like Bombardier can provide the total transit system and could assist in setting up the project from concept to completion. She intimated that Bombardier has been selected by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to supply 85 trains for its phase 2, Delhi. It is now added to its long list of important Metros like New York, Paris, London, Berlin and Shanghai. The counsel General suggested that the Canadian company would like to participate in the tendering process when it comes up and would like to assist the Government in putting the project on the ground by an early date. She offered cooperation from the Canadian Government for environmental issues especially solid waste (garbage) management, sewerage treatment and other environmentally friendly projects. S. Sukhbir Singh Badal welcomed the initiative of the Canadian Government and he promised that the Govt. of Punjab would provide assistance to Canadian companies to bring in latest technology for improving the lot of the common man in Punjab.
Canada has a very strong dairy sector and the Canadian Counsel General indicated that large companies like Fatuto would like to bring in substantial investment in Punjab for dairy processing. The Companies would be keen to buy an existing unit. It would also look at Greenfield projects on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. S. Sukhbir Singh Badal indicated that the Govt. of Punjab was very keen to give a thrust to the dairy sector as it provides substantial employment and income Generating opportunities to the rural people in Punjab. He welcomes d the Canadian technology and know-how in the dairy sector and he promised assistance for the early development of the projects in this sector.
Canada has a capacity to make large investments in the infrastructure and power sector and the Canadian Government offered to assist in the early setting up of the Shahpur Kandi Dam in Punjab and other power projects in Punjab. S. Sukhbir Singh Badal emphasized the goal of the Punjab Government to provide 24 hours power supply to all the consumers in Punjab and he hoped that substantial investments would flow into this sector from Canada. In the end the Canada Government invited S. Sukhbir Singh Badal and his team to visit Canada to explore business opportunities. S. Sukhbir Singh Badal assured her that the Govt. of Punjab would be happy to work together for the prosperity of Punjab and also to assist the N.R.Is of Punjabi origins who were doing remarkably well in Canada.
