Punjab to discourage Punjabi moneylenders in Philippines

The Punjab Government has directed all the Deputy Commissioners to discourage people from the state to migrate to Philippines for engaging in money lending business as this trade was highly risk prone amidst the reports that such overseas Indians in the country were joining mafia gangs with Chinese / Filipinos engaged in extortion / kidnapping there.

In a communiqué addressed to the Deputy Commissioners in the State, Mr. N.S. Kalsi, Commissioner NRI Affaris Punjab said that the Union Overseas Indian Affairs Ministry had informed the State Government that the Ambassador of India in Manila, Philippines had brought to the notice of the Ministry that the Indians from rural areas of Punjab who had migrated to the Philippines were operating as money lenders there which has brought adverse publicity in the Filipino press. Their activities have also created resentment among native Filipinos.

Keeping in view the facts, the State Government has urged district administration to create awareness on the issue so that the Punjabis who were willing to migrate Philippines for indulging in money lending business could be discouraged.
