Dr. Sawraj Singh was given the "Our Hero Award" by the Yakima NAACP Youth Council in the Southeast Community Center in Yakima on December 5, 2006. This award was given for the first time by the NAACP Youth Council in its entire history.
It was cited that Dr. Singh is a surgeon, pioneer in laser surgery, writer, human rights activist, and he has done superb work through his life. He will also be one of the recipients of the "Bharat Gaurav" (Pride of India Award) during the celebration of Global Friendship Day in New Delhi, India on January 8, 2007.
Her Holiness the Late Mother Teresa was a recipient of this award. Dr. Singh has written 17 books in English and Punjabi.
He is the Chairman of the Washington State Network for Human Rights and the Chairman of the Central Washington Coalition for Social Justice. He received the NAACP Humanitarian Award in Yakima for his outstanding contribution to the community. James Parks, President of the Yakima County NAACP, said that Dr. Singh is one of the greatest thinkers of our time who has correctly analyzed the historical trends and made bold but correct predictions. Dan Enriquez, Chairman of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for greater Yakima, called Dr. Singh a true humanitarian and a tireless worker for the betterment of all people.
Al Marquez, past Chairman of the Democratic Party of greater Yakima and President of ACLU Eastern Washington Chapter, called Dr. Singh a true advocate of multiculturalism. Mazhar Ali, a well known Islamic scholar, called Dr. Singh a promoter of diversity. He said that Dr. Singh is inspired by Guru Nanak's message of love, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. Randy Schneider of Ellensburg said that Dr. Singh is a great writer. Dr. Singh said that the fundamental principle of any good relationship is equality.
This is true of interpersonal relations but is also true of relations between different countries, nations, cultures, races, colors, and religions. If we accept the concept that people can be different yet they are equal, then the world can be a much better place. He said that if we treat others the way we would like to be treated then many of the world's problems will be solved.
